What is Forensic Psychology?

Forensic Psychology is the intersection of psychology and the law. Forensic Psychologists are specially trained licensed psychologists who evaluate and provide an opinion about an individual involved in the legal system. Forensic Psychologists explore why certain behaviors occur and how to minimize negative behaviors in the future.

When is a Forensic Psychologist who specializes in trauma needed?

When an individual who has a history of trauma is involved in the legal system, a Forensic Psychologist who understands the implications of those experiences is needed. Trauma can include physical violence, sexual abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse, domestic violence and many other highly distressing events.

Why should a Forensic Psychologist understand the impact of trauma?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 60% of the adult population have at least one traumatic childhood experience, while about 97% of the incarcerated population have at least one traumatic childhood experience. Trauma can affect brain and psychological health, while impacting overall functioning, decision-making, and an individual's understanding of the world.

What should I look for when hiring a Forensic Psychologist?

A Forensic Psychologist should have extensive training, objectivity, strong communication skills and professionalism. It is the responsibility of a Forensic Psychologist to be an unbiased evaluator. As such, it may be that the opinion offered by the Forensic Psychologist is unfavorable to the individual’s legal case.

What is included in a Forensic Evaluation?

Each forensic Evaluation is tailored to the specific referral question. All evaluations begin with an interview that lasts about four hours. Many evaluations require multiple interviews, which will be determined based on the individual and needs of the case. Once the interviews are complete, specific assessments are administered, records are reviewed and collateral interviews are conducted. A standard assessment requires at least 20 hours.
